The historical drama Chhaava, starring Vicky Kaushal, has emerged as one of the highest-grossing Indian films, securing the 11th position on the all-time list. Directed by Laxman Utekar, the biopic narrates the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and has resonated strongly with audiences across India.
The film’s performance at the box office has been particularly notable in Maharashtra, a region with deep cultural ties to Maratha history. In 18 days, Chhaava has earned Rs 467 crore, surpassing the Rs 421 crore lifetime collection of Baahubali – The Beginning (2015), previously among the highest earners in Indian cinema.
Other major titles have also been overtaken by Chhaava, including 2.0 (2018) and Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire (2023). 2.0, a high-budget sci-fi film, collected Rs 407 crore, while Salaarvamassed Rs 406.45 crore. The film’s earnings have solidified its place among India’s top-grossing films.
Vicky Kaushal’s portrayal of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj has been a key factor in the film’s success, earning critical praise and drawing large audiences. Utekar, known for directing Zara Hatke Zara Bachke, Mimi, and Luka Chuppi, has once again delivered a film that resonates with viewers.
Beyond domestic markets, Chhaava has performed well internationally, particularly in North America, where it has surpassed $5 million in earnings. The film also features performances by Akshaye Khanna as Aurangzeb, Rashmika Mandanna as Yesubai, and Viineet Kumar Singh as Kavi Kalash.
The Telugu trailer was recently released in response to audience demand, with the Telugu-dubbed version set for a March 7 release. The expansion is expected to further boost the film’s box office numbers.
With a strong domestic and international run, *Chhaava* continues to attract audiences, reinforcing its position as a major success in Indian cinema.
